Baby Shark gets a second set of NFTs – yes, others

Pinkfong, the company behind “Baby Shark” – also called the song with the most watched video on all of YouTube – has announced an NFT project entitled “Baby Shark: Collection No. 2 ». The NFTs in the collection, all 10,000 of them, will contain generative art of the titular baby shark and the rest of his shark family. Generative NFTs are like the Bored Ape Yacht Club, where there are a number of randomized properties across a collection.

When I first heard this news, I had two thoughts at once (using up my entire daily allotment):

  • Tell me they’re not trying to sell NFTs to children

and

So, yes, this is probably going to be the second set of NFTs with Brooklyn (TIL, that’s the baby shark’s name) and his family. The first was announced late last year and was sold out immediately, according to Pinkfong. I’m sorry to inform you that people have spent hundreds and even thousands of dollars on these NFTs, even though the first sale took place in December 2021. It was, according to NonFungible’s market tracks, just before the NFT market began to fall. Unfortunately, that probably means there are some Baby Shark bag holders out there.

As for whether Pinkfong is trying to get kids interested in this … I’m really not sure where I land it. The roadmap (which, yes, includes the development of “Baby Sharks’ footprints and the universe in the metaverse”) seems to have been written for investors and adults. Nevertheless, it is also based on the fact that you know and care about the “Baby Shark” characters and want to be part of the community. It’s just not something I see is true for most adults, although I guess I can always be wrong about that.

What is definite not for children is the “Baby Shark” party at NFT.NYC that Pinkfong will use to celebrate its second round of NFTs. The company describes the event as an “evening of fantastic entertainment, music and networking”, and let me tell you; I’m completely dead after knowing what kind of networking is going on at a party for “Baby Shark” NFTs. Am I curious enough to endure NFT.NYC finding out? Well, unfortunately, I’m too busy doing absolutely anything else that day (plus, you know, I was not invited for some reason). But if you end up going, please send me an email to tell me how it was.

I would definitely not say that this invitation look is aimed at children.

When it comes down to it, you will not hear any judgment from me about the adults who personally decide to buy into the “Baby Shark” NFT stroller when this collection comes out later this year. (Not because I do not judge people for buying NFTs, but because I usually do it quietly.) But Pinkfong’s website says that the company is about “defining the first moments of childhood”. Parents out there, please – do not define children’s first moments with speculative assets.
