In an effort to reward some of its most loyal users, Reddit is sending out free NFTs.

The popular online discussion platform recently announced that it would be launching a new Collectibles Avatar marketplace. Last week, a member of the platform’s administrative unit revealed that the company would launch a new series of NFT avatars based on the Snoo character.

According to the announcement, the platform intends to give away some of the tokens for free to its hardcore users.

An airdrop is seen as a process where tokens are sent to specific crypto wallets, mostly as a reward for using a certain protocol, owning an NFT or other specified criteria.

The free NFT avatars will only be available to consistent users who have accumulated a significant amount of what the Reddit community refers to as karma points, a score that represents their contributions on the platform. The post further revealed that the NFTs will be awarded on a user-by-user basis and are not limited to certain discussion communities.

Dubbed “Collectible Avatars,” Reddit’s NFTs are minted on Ethereum’s energy-efficient scaling network Polygon.

The popular online discussion platform is rolling out free avatars in four styles – Aww Friends, Drip Squad, Meme Team and The Singularity.

Aside from the free airdrop, other NFT avatars are up for sale on the platform, with prices ranging from $9.99 to $99.99 apiece, based on the current lineup.

So far, the Reddit community has refrained from using the “NFT” terminology with the Collectible Avatars program, echoing similar sentiments from other well-known brands such as Coca-Cola (NYSE: ) and 100 Thieves.

However, the firm used the terminology while marketing its previously released limited series Ethereum-based CryptoSnoos NFTs.

Reddit has explored the blockchain space in several ways. It initially launched a tokenized “Community Points” initiative in late 2019 and has been experimenting with different scaling platforms since then. It eventually settled with Arbitrum, a scaling network from Offchain Labs, and this month rolled out the initiative on the mainnet via the new Arbitrum Nova chain designed for social and gaming apps.

The tokenized community points can be used in other Web3 apps, and Reddit plans to introduce them to more of its communities over time. Currently, only the r/CryptoCurrency and r/FortNiteBR communities offer crypto reward tokens called Moons and Bricks respectively.
