Episode 545: Thanks to Amazon, One Medical and Whole Foods are on the same shelf

Hello and welcome back to Equity, a podcast about the business of startups, where we unpack the numbers and nuances behind the headlines.

Alex, Natasha and Mary Ann joined Grace again this week for our weekly roundup show, and as often happens, the news broke while we were preparing to record. So we had to touch on the huge Amazon-One Medical deal to get started. Naturally, we all had thoughts.

What else did we get into? Following:

  • Crunchbase Raised $50 Million! Yes, our former employer has raised another big round that made us all think about our health, our history and our love for the news team and other parts of the company we remember fondly.

  • Just what is Arkive-builder, and are we for the work of building some kind of NFT-powered, decentralized IRL library. There is also a DAO involved.

  • ForSight builds eye surgery robots, just raised a stack itself, and we’re hyped about it. It reinforces an important learning from Natasha’s recent robotics panel, which was part bullish, part bearish.

  • From there it was time to talk about the amount of new venture funds coming out, the end of Modsy – or is it? — and some stories touching on the situation in Ukraine, including a huge Russian fine from Google, Preply’s latest funding round, and how solar power can fight fascism.

Episode 544: OK, Fear Not: The Long Shots Still Get Venture Funding

Hello and welcome back to Equity, a podcast about the business of startups, where we unpack the numbers and nuances behind the headlines.

This is our Wednesday show, where we zero in on a single topic, think about a question, and unpack the rest. This week, Natasha and Alex asked: How do the founders keep two ideas in their heads: both that there is an economic downturn, but also that many industries are looking up?

Episode 543: When Will India Decide on Crypto?

Hello and welcome back to Equity, a podcast about the business of startups, where we unpack the numbers and nuances behind the headlines.

Alex and Grace is back to cover the biggest and most interesting tech, startup and market news. Today was a fun day in that we didn’t start with just bad news – what a change!

  • Stocks are up around the world and cryptos have rallied in the past week. However, the positive price movement in cryptoland doesn’t seem to be lighting a fire under the NFT market, for example.

  • Robots! Yes, our robot themed event – free! And online! — is this week, which means I have robots on the brain. It made the Syrius round all the more interesting. It appears that e-commerce will remain a key driver of robotics innovation for some time to come.

  • Podcast deals are still happening, sort of. Acast is buying Podchaser, which may or may not mean a lot to you. What matters in this deal is that Spotify was not involved. It’s a change!

  • Quick hits: India may ban crypto, at least if its top bankers get their way, Missfresh’s implosion has a tiny lifeline, and Modsy is no more — and the way it’s panning out leaves a lot to be desired.
