Trump’s NFTs aren’t the only bad political Christmas presents

Want to give a lousy Christmas present this year? Fear not, because politicians can help make it possible. So instead of giving people thoughtful gifts and supporting small businesses, you can pump a politician’s ego with overpriced gifts.

Former President Donald Trump is arguably the worst offender here. He did some great things as president, but now he’s ripping off his supporters by charging them $99 for non-fungible tokens, or NFTs. They are poorly photographed cartoons of Trump trying to make him look cool.

Unfortunately for Trump’s audience, NFTs lack any real-world use or value. Demand drives their value. Finally, if demand dries up, NFTs lose value. Additionally, anyone can store these images without paying for them if for some strange reason they want to see them.

DONORS AND THE BLITZ: TRUMP OFFERS “PERSONAL” CHRISTMAS VIDEO TO LUCKY SUPPORTER

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) is similarly guilty of bad taste. Her promotional store sells $28 shirts that cross out “Happy Holidays” and say “Merry Christmas” in larger letters underneath. The back of the shirt also says “Lauren Boebert”.

She is right that there is nothing wrong with saying “good Christmas” instead of “Merry Christmas”. Christmas is a major holiday that most Americans celebrate, while Hanukkah is not a significant Jewish holiday and virtually no black Americans celebrate Kwanzaa.

But do we need to wear shirts to belittle people who say “Happy Holidays” instead of “Merry Christmas”? Those who say so will be nice, even if they come across as too politically correct. (Besides, the unpopular representative likely needs the votes of the politically correct if she wants to win re-election in 2024.)

Of course, the Democratic Party also sells gifts that nobody needs. The party sold out of its $46 bronze “holiday ornament” featuring a donkey and the names of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. The Democrats also sell wrapping paper with donkeys and “holiday card” 10-packs.

Someone should probably tell the Democrats that ornaments usually go on Christmas trees, not holiday trees.

Sen.-elect John Fetterman (D-PA) is also selling Christmas gear without using the word Christmas. Fetterman’s campaign offers ugly Christmas sweaters (like sweaters, but worse) for $50 and Christmas ornaments for $25. However, Fetterman’s website refers to them as the “Fetterman Ugly Sweatshirt” and the “Fetterman Ornament”, leaving out Christmas.

Since Fetterman supports the kind of big government spending that leads to runaway inflation and people buying fewer Christmas presents, people probably shouldn’t buy gifts supporting his campaign.

Christmas is a time when people can give each other great gifts. Unfortunately, politicians and their parties do not offer them.
