Sotheby’s and Metagolden Bring NFT Jewelry to the Global Stage in Inaugural Jewelry Auction

NFTs have changed the face of the art market. Is artist jewelry next? The upcoming “Art as jewelry as Art” sale of Sotheby’s has NFT pioneers The meta gold along with physical jewelry by Picasso and Salvador Dalí.

NEW YORK, 16 August 2022 /PRNewswire/ – From 24 September to 4 OctoberSotheby’s and Tiffany Dubin will present its first auction dedicated only to artist-made jewellery. The auction will feature a “phygital” ring, defined by the designer as “being physical and digital at the same time.” Conceptualized by Francine Ballard of The meta gold expressly for this upcoming sale, the buyer of this unique 18 k gold and emerald ring will own the chip both in the physical world and in the “metaverse”.

The auction also features art and jewelry from the twentieth century, with pieces representing major modern art movements from Kinetics to Surrealism, including pendants of Picassoearrings designed by Dalíand a piece of Man Ray. Contemporary design is equally present, including works by Tom Otternessand Jean Boggio.

Among these champions, there is only one NFT to be auctioned, which is the digital twin of the ‘Ethereum Expedition’ ring by Metagolden. Resembling a miniature geodesic dome, the piece is inspired by the intercontinental rocket launches that usually span sixteen hours, which will be limited to about thirty minutes via upcoming space programs that Elon Musk’s SpaceX.

Metagolden anchors physical luxury investments to NFTs to authenticate and attribute provenance to her creations, but also to provide long-term value upon purchase of the item’s “digital twin,” which could be a piece of digital art, or an AR (or VR) digital portable asset that increases in value independently of the physical object and can be carried in the metaverse. Since 2021, industry leaders including Doyle Auction House have offered a similar service for marquee lots, possibly indicating a new direction for art and jewelry sales. Sotheby’s Artist Jewelry Specialist Tiffany Dubin is pioneering this new genre of “Art to Wear” opening alongside contemporary art.

“For consumers under 30, digital assets have become as important as physical ones. Luxury is waking up to that fact now. And that’s where our brand sits.”
