Qatar Blockchain Blueprint issued by the Communications Regulatory Authority

Qatar’s Communications Regulatory Authority (CRA) released the National Blockchain Blueprint prepared in collaboration with Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) and Qatar University (QU). The goal of the blockchain initiative is to identify and build an effective legal basis for blockchain, establish a strong foundation for the government’s strategy in this sector, and promote a climate that promotes entrepreneurship and creative thinking.

The Blueprint lays out the framework for blockchain on a national scale and defines the main components, legislative basis, application basis and creative thinking and innovation. In addition, it outlines critical blockchain assumptions and provides suggestions for achieving the intended goals.

Ali Al Suwaidi, the Director of CRA’s Technical Department, stated: “We are pleased to work with HBKU and QU to publish the National Blockchain Blueprint for Qatar. Through the Blueprint, we have identified the key opportunities that blockchain can present to the private and public sectors and laid out the requirements and rewards that must be offered by each industry for widespread use of the technology, which helps the development of new businesses and pilot initiatives.

“I would like to extend an invitation to all stakeholders to examine the Blueprint so that we can work together to advance the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector, promote foreign and domestic investment and create a knowledge-centric economy to help achieve Qatar National Vision 2030’s goals. In addition, I would like to commend HBKU and QU for their hard work and teamwork in designing the Blueprint, and we expect to expand the partnership in the years to come,” he added.

Dr. Ahmed Elmagarmid, CEO of the Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI) at HBKU, stated: “We were delighted to collaborate with the Communications Regulatory Authority and Qatar University on the development of Qatar’s National Blockchain Blueprint.” Our commitment demonstrates HBKU’s unwavering dedication to tackling Qatar’s challenges, especially those concerning the nation’s innovative and technological capabilities.”

Dr. Khaled Kamal Naji, Dean of the College of Engineering at Qatar University, stated: “We feel honored to have played a role in the creation of the National Blockchain Blueprint for Qatar, which is an important milestone in achieving the nation’s goal of an economy centered around knowledge. Through our partnership with the Communications Regulatory Authority and Hamad Bin Khalifa University, we have been able to leverage our skills in blockchain technology and promote its widespread use in the public and private sectors. We are optimistic that this roadmap will provide stakeholders with direction and clear the way for future breakthroughs in this sector.The College of Engineering is committed to maintaining collaboration with CRA and HBKU to cultivate a culture of creative thinking and innovation and promote the development of the digital economy across the country.
