Some of Hollywood’s most iconic images will soon be transformed into NFTs. Focus Bloc, a vintage photography platform, just announced a new NFT release later this month. What do we know about Focus Bloc’s upcoming NFT drop?
Focus Bloc has recovered 333 images from the “Movie Star News” collection. Siblings Irving and Paula Klaw founded Movie Star News in 1938. The Midtown Manhattan store sold stills from major Hollywood movies for over 80 years before closing due to the Covid-19 shutdown. During that time, Movie Star News helped define pop culture and compiled a world-famous photo collection.
The Movie Star News collection features stills from movies like Scarface, The Godfather, James Bond, Star Wars, Citizen Kane, Casablanca, Full Metal Jacket and more. Some of the celebrities included in the drop are Charlie Chaplin, Marilyn Monroe, Paul Newman, Steve McQueen, Audrey Hepburn and Jack Nicholson. Fittingly, Focus Bloc called the project “Hollywood: From the Golden Age to the First Blockbusters”.
The NFT collection will be launched later this month. To imprint, buyers must first register to be whitelisted. After that, each wallet can create one NFT for 0.5 ETH plus gas fees.
Focus Bloc partnered with Paris Match, a French-language weekly news magazine covering celebrity news and lifestyle features, for the art platform’s first release. The collection contains 120 images from the famous French photographer Jean-Claude Deutsch that showcase 23 different celebrities.
Some of the celebrities included are David Bowie, Brigitte Bardot, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Michael Jackson. The photos were taken during the 1960s-1990s and capture many of the celebrities at their respective peaks of fame.
The collection was launched in January and has a lifetime volume of 31 ETH. The current OpenSea floor is at 0.7 ETH with a last sell at 0.8 ETH in early April. Impressively, only 15 NFTs of the 120-piece collection are listed for sale as of today.
NFTs are the perfect vehicle for vintage photography to bridge the gap into the digital future. By offering authenticity that can be proven with blockchain technology, NFTs provide a way to verify the ownership and legitimacy of a given image. When someone buys an NFT, they can check the transactions in the chain to make sure they are buying the original photograph and not something that has been tampered with or duplicated.
Furthermore, NFTs also give photographers the opportunity to create scarcity for their work. They can select edition sizes and create provenance for photographers, ensuring that buyers purchase a piece from an enforceable collection size.
Finally, NFTs offer a way to easily trade, buy and sell vintage photographs. Collectors can now transfer using blockchain technology. This ability also helps to create a more fluid market for photography. Ownership rights can be bought and sold in seconds to and from anywhere in the world.
Focus Bloc is pioneering how photography is integrated into Web3. The upcoming “Hollywood: from Golden Age to the first Blockbusters” will be another step forward for the intertwining of vintage photography and blockchain technology.
