IOTA partners with Digimarc for decentralized digital passport blueprint

  • IOTA and Digimarc have launched a blueprint for the EU’s digital product passport.
  • The possibilities shown by IOTA and Digimarc are proof of blockchain’s versatility.

Distributed Ledger Protocol, IOTA has entered into a strategic partnership with Digimarc, a blockchain startup committed to creating the digital record of physical products in a way that makes them easily verifiable. According to a blog posts shared by Dominique Guinard, the vice president of the Internet of Things at Digimarc, both the startup and IOTA are invested in the Digital Product Passport EU initiative launched last March.

Under the terms of the collaboration, the tech outfits are using open standards, decentralized architectures and accessibility to create a digital product passport blueprint to support some of the EU initiative requirements.

The capabilities of blockchain technology and its associated innovation have often been touted as necessary to power the next generation of the Internet, characterized by a variety of advanced use cases. For the European Blockchain Service, the European Commission designed a framework that will see the creation of the digital analogue of regulated products under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation.

The aim of the digital passport is to enable everyone in the supply chain of a product to trace its origin, originality and compliance with sustainability. In this way, the average consumer can make more informed choices about which products comply with environmental legislation.

IOTA – Digimarc Blueprint

As Dominique noted, Blueprint Digimarc pulled the design together with IOTA participation from the EU Blockchain Pre-Commercial Procurement Project. The technological bent of the outfits makes Blueprint highly functional.

The duo used blockchain to create the digital product passport as a relatively more transparent and usable system. Describing the design engagement, Dominique wrote;

The use of standards was a top priority, and we had two design criteria at the heart of the DPP initiative to meet: to provide open and interoperable identities and to make those identities accessible to most consumers. We quickly found out that GS1 Digital Link standard vi helped develop in 2018 is the clear choice as it defines unique URLs for products that can be used in many types of carriers (e.g. QR codes, NFC tags) and can be read by many different readers, including smartphones used by consumers worldwide.

Blueprint stands as one of the most direct showcases of how versatile blockchain technology is in bringing real utility to the global digital world.

While the IOTA-Digimarc blockchain-based Blueprint for the EU is a continental innovation, the Chainlink Network, the first oracle service in the Web3.0 world was also drained by the OpenEarth Foundation, a non-profit organization working to bring innovative climate solutions, and the University of California Berkeley to combat global climate change.

The deployment of Chainlink for the fight against climate change was centered around the use of the oracle service of the protocol to accurately measure the true cost of carbon emissions for companies to embrace the principles of sustainability.

Apparently, the use of blockchain to drive sustainability is growing, and with further support from global regulators, the mainstream adoption of the technology could be promoted.
