India’s first blockchain module for school students aims to drive innovation

Blockchain technology provides a shared database that tracks and records transactions in any business network, for both tangible and intangible goods through blocks without any intermediary. Cryptography links these blocks to create a continuous chain of information about each transaction.

Such technology can create new avenues for information exchange and collaboration in the years to come. To drive the adoption of blockchain technology, India’s apex public policy think tank NITI Aayog (National Institution for Transforming India) has introduced a Blockchain module in partnership with 5ire and Network Capital.

Pushing India’s Digital Transformation

Under NITI Aayog’s Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), over 10,000 schools in India have Atal Tinkering Labs (ATL) to inculcate skills like computational thinking, adaptive learning, physical computing and more. Over 75 lakh students are learning blockchain technology around the country through ATLs.

“This innovative technology will revolutionize the way businesses and individuals interact and trade, providing a secure and decentralized platform for data storage and transfer,” the press release said.

The Blockchain module was written with technical assistance from 5ire while Network Capital conceptualized and curated the module. Launched on January 23, 2023, the ATL Blockchain module will help impart blockchain education to school students to enable future entrepreneurs in India.

Blockchain supports many web 3.0 technologies such as metaverse, cryptocurrencies and NFTs.

“[Blockchain] has the potential to unlock huge opportunities for youth, and this module will introduce students as young as Grade 6 to the concepts of blockchain, which will help them solve societal problems through its use. The module covers the fundamental aspects of blockchain and moves on to its case-based application in various industries,” mission director Chintan Vaishnav said in a release.

Deepali Upadhya, program director at AIM, said in the module’s foreword that through this blockchain module, students “will be able to learn and apply the various facets of blockchain in their innovation and entrepreneurship activities to build sophisticated and useful solutions and products for their society.”
