EVE Online is getting a AAA Spin-Off Blockchain game

CCP Games, the developer and publisher of the sci-fi space voyage MMO EVE Online, has just announced that they are working on a spin-off video game that will use blockchain technology. In order to secure funding from partners outside the company, CCP Games wants to build a AAA title that is also set in EVE Online universe.

Many fans will probably remember it EVE Online was launched back in 2003, making 2023 its 20th year in the business. Despite its age, the MMO continues to thrive and the development team seems to be very in touch with the player base and community. Also, constant news is shared by the team, whether it’s deep dives into new content through official channels or major game updates such as EVE Online extensions. However, the new title announcement has blockchain technology attached to it, which could influence a player’s decision to play the game, even if they are avid fans.

CCP Games announced on Twitter that a new spin-off title was in the works EVE Online the universe will be developed by the company. CCP Games revealed in the same announcement that it has received $40 million in funding through venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz. According to the press release, the main features of the upcoming EVE Online the spin-off game’s system will be developed on the chain. The company’s use of blockchain technology appears to be focused on the way it is able to create new connections between virtual worlds and its users. With EVE Online heavily dependent on player autonomy on the server and the development team likely eager to explore new technologies to bring interesting experiences to its fan base, it is not surprising for CCP Games to consider what on-chain gaming has to offer.

Fans will likely remember that CCP Games CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson said back in 2021 that NFTs and blockchain technology would not come to EVE Online anytime soon. But with the kind of funding the company is receiving from one of the largest venture capital firms in the world, the developer probably wanted to try the technology. Fortunately, for those concerned about NFTs and blockchain, the production of the new AAA title will be a completely separate project from the company’s current, including EVE Online.

EVE Online is now available for PC.
