Donald Trump supporters scoffed after superhero trading card NFTs sold out in less than a day

The website where Donald Trump sells his much-derided $99 digital trading cards claims it has sold out of its inventory.

Trump said in an announcement Thursday that “limited edition cards” would make “a great Christmas gift.”

According to the tracker OpenSea, there were 45,000 images for sale at the start.

The website hosting the sale of the non-fungible tokens (NFTs) claimed that “these digital trading cards are not political and have nothing to do with any political campaign”.

“NFT INT LLC is owned, managed or controlled by Donald J Trump, The Trump Organization, CIC Digital LLC or any of their respective principals or affiliates,” it said.

Twitter users were quick to mock Trump supporters for buying the trading cards.

“Trump has already sold out all 45,000 of his $99 digital trading cards. The same people screaming about ‘inflation’ and ‘gas prices’ just paid $99 for a single JPEG image,” says progressive YouTuber Brian Tyler Cohen tweeted.

“They’re not JPEGs. They’re NFTs. Educate yourself, Tyler,” says Trump supporter Nick Adams black.

“Maybe they want to exchange them for secret documents?” one Twitter user so.

“I’m sorry, they paid HOW much for a digital trading card?? They really are the dumbest people alive,” another added.

“There are different levels of stupidity with Drumpf supporters. There are idiots, then you have Magats and finally drive or die or just known as total fucking idiots,” a third so.

“I can’t believe I’m saying this, but hopefully this is whitewashing and not actual people buying these,” another critic tweeted.

A Twitter user said the sale revealed “why there is still a strong possibility for Trump to be re-elected. With all the s**t that has gone down in the world lately, there are probably flat earthers and Q fanatics who actually believe the images he is selling on these cards. Funny. Yet”.

“Yep. They SOLD OUT in around 12 hours. Told you this is cool. At this point, it is unlikely that anyone still following him will recover. EVER…” another added.

“The fact that people are so stupid that they would spend $100 a pop on poorly photoshopped photos of Trump explains how Trump got elected president in the first place. How embarrassing,” Brad Pritchett so.

The announcement of the sale drew criticism from established supporters and former advisers to Trump, such as his former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon, who said, “I can’t do this anymore,” on his podcast, adding that everyone involved “should have gotten fired today”.

While people expected the announcement to be about his 2024 campaign, which he officially launched last month, Trump instead shared a video promoting sales of the digital trading cards.

On Truth Social, Trump wrote that the cards were “very much like a baseball card, but hopefully much more exciting.”

Proponents of NFTs claim they are the digital version of collectibles, while critics have spoken of risks emerging in the market after it has evolved out of the world of cryptocurrency, the BBC noted.

Both crypto and NFTs have seen a big drop in market activity this year.

A congressional report noted earlier this year that sales of NFTs have been used to collect credit card and other types of financial information, and the area has seen a number of other scams.
