BAYC Creator Yuga Labs is launching its first Bitcoin NFT project this week

The collection could be one of the highest profile launches at Ordinals to date.

The company behind the world’s most dominant non-fungible token (NFT) collection Bored Ape Yacht Club, Yuga Labs, has revealed plans to launch its first ever Bitcoin-based NFT project later this week. The company announced on Monday as it appears to jump on the Bitcoin NFT wave.

According to the announcement, Yuga Labs said that they will be releasing an NFT collection called “TwelveFold”.

Yuga Labs shares details of new NFT collection based on Bitcoin

Minted on the Bitcoin-based Ordinals protocol, the collection will consist of 300 limited generative art NFTs developed by Yuga Labs.

Interestingly, the pieces of art are all placed on a 12×12 grid – a visual representation of how data is stored on the Bitcoin blockchain. And even more, they will combine 3D graphic features and some hand-drawn elements.

For what it’s worth, the collection looks set to be one of the highest profile launches on Ordinals to date. That’s since the protocol was launched last month as a way to commit artwork to Bitcoin. Essentially, each piece of art is permanently tied to an individual Satoshi or 1/100,000,000 of 1BTC.

Meanwhile, it’s also worth noting that Yuga Labs may have deviated from expectations with its new project. That’s because Yuga Labs’ empire is built on the success of its blue-chip BAYC collection, which lives on the Ethereum blockchain. Similarly, every other project ever created under Yuga is currently also in the leading network for NFT projects.

However, the company has now stated that the upcoming collection will not come with extended utility. And on top of that, it will have no connection to its existing Ethereum-based collections.

Yuga Labs co-founder Greg Solano admits the discrepancy, and seems to imply that there’s no fun in doing the expected. He said in a blog post:

“All of these choices are a departure from what is expected of Yuga. But you know. F**k does expected things.”

The size of the TwelveFold collection is another notable feature that sets it apart from Yuga’s previous projects. Typically, Yuga-owned collections consist of 10,000 or more NFTs. So, with TwelveFold only having 300 pieces, the new approach is more like Larva Labs’ approach to the Autoglyphs project. The Ethereum-based project has only 512 NFTs.
