64% of the American parents surveyed want their children to study crypto in school

A recent survey conducted by Study.com revealed that 64% of American parents believe cryptocurrencies should be part of their children’s education. However, the mums and dads are not so supportive of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) as only 25% said they should be included in school curricula.

The mayor of New York City – Eric Adams – is also an advocate for such educational changes. Last year, he labeled cryptocurrencies as a “new way to pay for goods and services across the globe,” and as such, students should study them and their underlying technology.

Crypto education should start at school

Almost two-thirds of the 800 American parents surveyed said cryptocurrencies should be taught in schools. 40% of participants believe their children should also study blockchain technology, while 35% believe Metaverse should be included as well. NFTs ranked last as only 25% believe their children should be aware of them.

Taking a closer look, 24% of moms and dads believe the start of crypto education should be in high school, while 19% said middle school is more appropriate. 28% of respondents believe studying digital assets is more important than design, and 26% said it should replace subjects such as architecture and art history.

Interestingly, 68% of parents admitted to being cryptocurrency investors. On average, they have contributed about $766 to their children’s future education using profits from their investments.

In addition, Study.com surveyed some college graduates and 67% believe cryptocurrencies should be a subject in school, while 36% said blockchain technology needs to be added.

“Like the parents we surveyed, most college students had crypto investments and believed that cryptocurrency should be part of the student’s education. Over a third of graduates also believed that schools should incorporate Metaverse and blockchain into the curriculum. However, they were somewhat more on the fence about NFTs, says the company.

It is worth mentioning that the vast majority of recent graduates (86%) think it is more important to have formal knowledge of new currencies and technological innovations than a college degree.

Eric Adams’ idea

Shortly after being named the new mayor of New York City, Eric Adams promised to turn the Big Apple into a cryptocurrency and blockchain hub. Apart from that, he believed that the US government should add new school subjects that enable younger generations to study the benefits of the digital asset sector:

“We need to open our schools to teach the technology, to teach this new way of thinking about paying for goods and services.”

A few months later, the politician doubled down on his pro-crypto stance, saying he will receive his first three paychecks as mayor in bitcoin instead of US dollars.
